Display logic: Setup & key considerations

Understand how display logic works across your study and get tips for setup and troubleshooting.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Display logic helps you create more personalized, relevant experiences by showing or hiding questions based on previous answers.

There are a few important behaviors and limitations to keep in mind when setting it up in your study.

Multiple Rules

  • You can add multiple display logic rules to a single question.

  • If rules conflict, the order shown in the app (top to bottom) will determine which rule takes priority.

Reordering Questions

  • You can reorder questions that have display logic, but moving a question earlier in the flow may cause the display logic rules to behave unexpectedly.

  • For best results: set your question order first, then apply display logic.

First Question Restrictions

  • Display logic cannot be added to the first question in a study as it depends on answers from earlier questions.

  • However, you can apply display logic on the first question of a section, if there is a question in a previous section.

Advanced Settings

  • If “Show all questions on one page” is enabled, display logic will not apply.

  • If “Randomize this section’s questions” is turned on, display logic may not behave as expected. Participants can still complete the study, but some display rules might not trigger.

Question Type Changes

  • If you change a question’s type (e.g., from multiple choice to text), any display logic rules targeting or depending on that question will be removed.

Hiding Options or Sections

  • If display logic hides all answer options for a question, the entire question will not be shown to participants.

  • If every question in a section is hidden due to logic, the entire section will not be shown.
