Pass a group tag in a study URL for participants

How to group the participants you recruit by adding group 'tag' parameters to your study URLs before you send them.

Updated over a week ago

This article tells you how to group the participants you recruit by adding group 'tag' parameters to your study URLs before you send them.

When you do this, you can send different URLs to participants depending on which group they are in. When the results come in, you will see the tags displayed on the Participant tab, and will then be able to segment participants based on their tags in your analysis.

You can have multiple URLs with different tags for one study, and that URL can be shared with multiple participants (or up to 10 participants on the free plan). You can only have one tag per URL.

If you want to use our recruitment service and apply group tags to these participants please contact us at support@optimalworkshop.com before placing your participant order.

How to add a group 'tag' parameter to a study URL

Copy your study URL from the Setup tab and add the query parameter tag=XXXXX to the end of the URL.

Query parameters (tags in this case) are separated from the main URL by a question mark. So when you add the query parameter tag=XXXXX to your survey URL, it will look like this:

For example

Let's say you are improving a school website, and you want to separate teacher responses from student responses in your results. Your 2 different URLs could look like this:

You will then send the first URL to only teachers, and the second to only students. In the Participant tab in your results, you'll see the tags and be able to segment teacher and student responses.

What to do if your URL also contains a participant identifier

You can also add participant identifiers to your study URLs. When you do this, the query parameter is i=XXXXX.

As mentioned above, query parameters are separated from the main URL by a question mark. If you have more than one parameter, you separate them by an ampersand (&).

In our example, if you want to identify teachers by email address, your URL would look like this:
