1. Add a study section
In Optimal's Usability Testing tool, start by adding a new study section and select Survey as the section type.
2. Set up your section
Add a section title for your internal reference.
You can also choose to randomize this section, which will shuffle it with other sections in your study or randomize tasks within this section.
3. Add survey questions
Click on Add a question and select a question type

Plain text
Rating scale
Single-choice
Multiple-choice
Ranking scale
Matrix
Please note that the question types available are slightly different than what's available currently in the Optimal Surveys tool.
You can apply a different question type by using the dropdown.
Applying branching or skip logic
In Usability Testing, branching logic lets you guide participants through your study by directing them to specific questions/tasks or sections.
Branching logic is available based on responses to single-choice questions, multiple-choice questions, and rating scales.

Is answered triggers when a participant selects any of the responses you specify (e.g. A or B).
Is answered all is available for multiple-choice questions. The condition is met only when a participant selects all of the responses you specify (e.g. A and C and D).
Is not answered triggers when a participant does not answer the question.
You can set what happens after a condition is met.

*You can send participants directly to a specific task, skipping any earlier tasks. This is useful when you want participants to bypass certain tasks based on their answers.
You can tailor the study, so they only see the tasks most relevant to them to get more focused insights.
Examples:
Question: Have you traveled internationally in the last year?
Yes → Go to Q2
No → End study
Question: Have you traveled internationally in the last year?
Yes → Go to prototype section
No → End study
Question: When was the last time you traveled internationally?
More than 1 year ago → Go to live site task 1
6-12 months ago → Go to live site task 2
Notes
Logic ordered higher in the list will take priority if there is a conflict.
You cannot jump backwards to earlier questions or tasks (e.g., from Q2 to Q1).
Branching logic is not available for post-task questions
If you add branching logic to your study, you won’t be able to randomize sections or questions within sections.
Likewise, if you’ve enabled randomization for a section or questions within a section anywhere in the study, branching logic will be disabled. If you’ve already enabled randomization, you’ll need to disable it for sections and questions within sections everywhere it’s applied in the study before you can add branching logic.
Randomizing response order does not disable branching logic.
Reordering tasks
To reorder tasks, hover over the task icon, then click and drag and drop to reorder.
Deleting & duplicating tasks or sections
Use the three dots (⋮) in the top right of any selected task or section to duplicate or delete it. You can duplicate both prototype tasks and their post-task questions to save time.
