Follow these steps to set up and run a Figma prototype test as part of Optimal's Usability Testing tool.
1. Add a study section
Start by adding a new study section and select Figma as the section type.
2. Prepare your Figma file
Note that if you want to test a Figma Make prototype, you should select the AI Prototype section option.
If you are looking to test a prototype created with images, please create an Optimal Prototype test instead of an Optimal Usability Test.
3. Set up your section & import your Figma file
Add a section title for your internal reference.
Optional: Add context to the Set the scene for participants box. This will appear before any questions or tasks.
Connect your Figma prototype
Copy and paste in a Figma link. Your link should start figma.com/proto or figma.com/design.
You can also choose to show hotspot hints on click (highlights interactive areas when users click on non-interactive areas., randomize this section, which will shuffle it with other sections in your study, or randomize tasks within this section.
3. Add Tasks
One task will be automatically created when you add a Figma prototype study. You can click the arrow at the top to change the type of question.
To add additional tasks for the same Figma prototype, click on Add a task. You can choose between two task types:
Prototype Task
Use this when you want participants to complete a specific action.
Set a starting screen.
Define the correct end screen or path.
Optionally add post-task questions to gather additional feedback.
You can add multiple correct end screens and/or paths.
Open Exploration
Use this when you want participants to freely explore the prototype.
Participants can navigate the prototype and share their thoughts without completing a defined task.
Add task instructions to guide their exploration.
Set a starting screen if needed.
Optionally add post-task questions to gather additional feedback.
Reordering tasks
To reorder tasks, hover over the task icon, then click and drag and drop to reorder.
Deleting & duplicating tasks
Use the three dots (⋮) in the top right of any selected task to duplicate or delete it. You can duplicate both prototype tasks and their post-task questions to save time.
Working with multiple prototypes
If you want to test different prototypes, add a new study section for each one. This keeps your study organized and avoids confusion for participants.
Making updates to your Figma file
If you wish to disconnect from Figma, you can use the three dots (⋮) in the right of the Connected to Figma section.
Once you have added a Figma file to Optimal, you can use the three dots (⋮) associated with the Figma file to:
Change prototype
Re-sync to file
Add a password that participants will use to access your Figma prototype
Remove prototype
Note if you do not require screen recording for your study, then participants taking the test via mobile will be directed to the mobile-browser version of your study.
If you require screen sharing, mobile testing via the mobile participant app currently does not support password-protected Figma prototypes.
Best practices
Keep the full study in mind: While you can add unlimited sections and tasks, longer studies can lead to participant fatigue.
Prioritize key tasks: Focus on the most important flows or questions you need answered.
Balance structure and exploration: Combine guided tasks with open exploration to get both usability data and natural feedback.
