Getting started with supported browsers and operating systems

Set up a browser and OS for live site testing and get tips for troubleshooting

Updated this week

How to use video, audio, and screen sharing

Your browser will ask for permission to use your camera, microphone, and screen. You'll need to allow these permissions if you haven't already.

Supported browsers, desktop, and mobile capabilities

The following video, audio, and screen recording capabilities are available for all Mac and Windows up-to-date browsers on desktop. At this time, screen sharing is not available for mobile across all browsers.

Check and grant permissions to a browser

If your browser has never been enabled for video recording and picture-in-picture permissions, follow the paths below to enable permissions for a relevant browser e.g. Chrome to record audio, video, or a screen.

MacOS

  • Audio: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone

  • Video: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera

  • Screen sharing: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording > +

Windows

  • Audio: Settings > System > Sound

  • Video: Settings > System > Privacy & security > Camera

  • Screen sharing: Manage via browser settings

Managing permissions within a browser: grant permissions to a study link

For participants: The first time you visit a study for live site testing, you will receive a prompt asking for permission to use your microphone, camera, and picture-in-picture. You can then select Allow when prompted.

If you deny permissions and later would like to enable them, or if you’re not asked to grant permissions, you can fix this by doing the following:

Google Chrome

  1. Go to Settings (under three vertical dots in the upper-right corner)

  2. Select Privacy and security > Site Settings

  3. Select the relevant URL under Recent activity.

  4. Make sure Camera, Microphone, and Automatic picture-in-picture are set to Allow

Note from Google: If you're using Chrome at work or school, your network administrator can set camera and microphone settings. You may not be able to modify the camera and microphone settings

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Go to Settings or Options (under three vertical dots in the upper-right corner)

  2. Choose Privacy & Security from the left sidebar.

  3. Scroll down to the Permissions section.

  4. Click on Settings next to Camera and Microphone to manage permissions.

Safari

  1. Open Safari Settings.

  2. Navigate to Websites.

  3. Go to the Camera and Microphone tabs.

  4. Change access to Allow.

  5. Restart Safari.

Opera

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Click Advanced in the left sidebar, and click Privacy & security.

  3. Under Privacy and security, click Site settings.

  4. Click Camera or Microphone.

  5. At the top, turn on or off Ask before accessing (recommended).

Troubleshooting tips

  • Check for conflicting applications. Other applications might be using the camera or microphone, causing conflicts.

  • Clear browser data, cookies, and cache.

  • Ensure that your browser and operating system are updated to the latest versions for full compatibility.

  • Restart the browser if needed.
