Getting started as a participant with video recording

Learn how to get set up and what to expect as a participant when taking a prototype test with video recording.

Updated over a week ago

Video recording is currently available via our closed beta. If you are an admin on a Teams or Enterprise plan, you can register your interest in the beta via this form.

Getting started

When you click the prototype study link, the study will open in your web browser. The video recording feature works directly in your browser, so it's simple to use. You won't need to install any extra software or browser add-ons.

The study will ask for the following permissions, please enable or skip them when your browser requests permission:

  • Video recording

  • Audio recording

  • Screen recording

If you choose to allow screen recording, you can then select which screen to share. Choose the current tab or window that is named Prototype Test by Optimal Workshop. If you’re using Google Chrome, then it will automatically default to the correct screen with the Prototype study.

After selecting your permissions, you’ll be directed to a confirmation page showing your selected permissions and a preview of your video, if you’ve enabled that permission.

Your recording won’t start until you begin the first task. You’ll see a red recording icon in the top left corner of your screen, indicating that your tasks are being recorded.

Recording capabilities are available for all Mac and Windows up-to-date browsers on desktop. At this time, screen sharing is not available for mobile across all browsers.

If you encounter any issues with setting up your permissions, please visit this help doc for guidance.

Completing the study

Here’s how it works:

  1. You will be presented with an interactive prototype and a task to complete.

  2. Navigate through the prototype until you believe you have completed the task,
if you have enabled microphone recording, talk through your thinking as you go. This is not a test of your ability, there are no right or wrong answers.

  3. Once you feel you have completed the task, hit the task complete button at the top right.

  4. Once you have finished all the tasks, please keep the study tab open until your recording has uploaded as indicated by the progress bar. After the recording has finished uploading, you’re free to close this window or navigate to another web page.
