Follow these steps to set up and run a password-protected Figma prototype as part of Optimal's Usability Testing tool.
Your study setup will depend on whether participants will test your password-protected Figma prototype on a desktop or mobile and/or tablet device.
Depending on which devices you'd like participants to take your study with, you can add different sections to the Usability Test.
Usability Testing Section | Device settings |
Figma (recommended) or Live Site Testing | Desktop only |
Live Site Testing | Desktop & Mobile and/or Tablet |
Live Site Testing | Mobile & Tablet |
Live Site Testing | Mobile only |
Live Site Testing | Tablet only |
Setting up desktop testing with the Figma section
Start by adding a new study section and select Figma as the section type. Learn more about adding a Figma section. Task success metrics will be available for Figma sections.
Note that task success metrics are not currently available for Figma password-protected prototypes tested when using the Live site section.
Setting up with the Live site section
1. Add a study section
Start by adding a new study section and select Live Site as the section type.
2. Set up your section
Add a section title for your internal reference.
Optional options:
Show instructions: You can customize these participant instructions as needed.
Randomise section: When enabled, this section will be shuffled with other randomised sections.
Randomise tasks within this section. When enabled, tasks in this section will appear in random order.
3. Add tasks & Figma password
One task will be automatically created when you add a study section. Add a task title for your internal reference and task instructions. To add additional tasks, click on Add a task.
Note: Add your Figma file password into the Task instructions.
4. Add a link
Please ensure that the password-protected prototype URL is the prototype URL starting with www.figma.com/proto instead of www.figma.com/design.
If you wish to change the preview, click on the edit icon to upload your own image. The image will be displayed in a 16:9 ratio.
Reordering tasks
To reorder tasks, hover over the task icon, then click and drag and drop to reorder.
Deleting & duplicating tasks or sections
Use the three dots (⋮) in the top right of any selected task or section to duplicate or delete it. You can duplicate both prototype tasks and their post-task questions to save time.
Testing multiple password-protected Figma prototypes
If you want to test a different password-protected Figma prototype add a new study section for each one. This keeps your study organized and avoids confusion for participants.
Best practices
Keep the full study in mind: While you can add unlimited sections and tasks, longer studies can lead to participant fatigue.
Prioritize key tasks: Focus on the most important flows or questions you need answered.
Balance structure and exploration: Combine guided tasks with open exploration to get both usability data and natural feedback.
